Click Here to View the 2009 Race Results Everyone involved in the 2009 Castaways Cup received an award for their sportsmanship, racing prowess, skills, and cooperation. Many were recognized with special awards for wacky hats, sportsmanship, and even for winning places in the race. As usual, you can click on the photos to see a larger copy. Sandy Smith and
her staff of volunteers hosted a fine party. The food, music, decorations
and venue all helped each of us have a truly wonderful evening. The
racers, crew, and their many guests brought the party to about 110 l My favorite is always the food and decorations. People enjoyed the food
so much that the photographs only show empty places. Catered by TwoJays,
everything looked nice, smelled nice and tasted good. My favorite was the

Over the past year, the entire Castaways Cup committee met, worked, chose and
decided as a venue was selected, a schedule of races and meetings set up, and
the d Sandy Smith, the Castaways Cup Committee Chairperson, and Gordon Rowse chaired many, many meetings, made hundreds of phone calls, and smiled for an entire year to produce this event. Although Gordon fell down slightly on the weather Saturday, the excellent event was a tribute to everyone who served on their committees. The wacky hats awards came before the "real" awards, an effort by their builders to gain the maximum handicap for the boats pictured on the hats. The winners of the wacky hat contest were Neal Sorensen on Hot Tuna and Richard Dwyer on Tenacious.
No yacht race is complete without lots of special recognition for racers who did strange and wonderful things in the process of finishing, or nearly finishing, the race This year's winners are: 1. Dock Lines & Piling Award aka the Monkey Football Award – Altho a close call the award went to Lizika (Bruce Robinson). 2. Hard Luck Award or I’ve been screwed again - two years running suffered boat problems – Lounautics (Lou Daniello). 3. Good Grief Award – withdrew both days – Panasea (John McNally). 4. Safest Start Award – For not wanting to interfere with his class start, then misses the multihull start – Tenacious (Richard Dwyer). 5. North Pole Award – yacht from farthest point north – Latitudes – (John Bolduc from Port St. Lucie). 6. South Pole Award – yacht from farthest point south – Glory Daze (Carl Wehe from Margate). 7. Persistence Award – Yacht taking the longest time to finish DolPhino (Sea Scouts). 8. Best One Liner Award – another tough call but it goes to Whistler II (Mark Thomas). 9. Navigation Award for following the directions precisely – arrow pointed to wrong river Camira (David Grossart). 10. Why Am I Racing or the Viagra Award – great looking crew – Evelyn B (Matt Woods).
The Real winners were awarded serious trophies in their respective classes.
