Everyone involved in the 2009 Castaways Cup received an award for their sportsmanship, racing prowess, skills, and cooperation.  Many were recognized with special awards for wacky hats, sportsmanship, and even for winning places in the race.

As usual, you can click on the photos to see a larger copy.

Sandy Smith and her staff of volunteers hosted a fine party.  The food, music, decorations and venue all helped each of us have a truly wonderful evening.  The racers, crew, and their many guests brought the party to about 110 lucky folks.

My favorite is always the food and decorations.  People enjoyed the food so much that the photographs only show empty places.  Catered by TwoJays, everything looked nice, smelled nice and tasted good.  My favorite was the Castaways Cake.  Accompanied by Jon Luscomb's birds, the decorations by Linda Chapman were creative.  They really brightened an already lovely venue.

Over the past year, the entire Castaways Cup committee met, worked, chose and decided as a venue was selected, a schedule of races and meetings set up, and the decisions made that evolved to make this year's event the biggest and I think the best of the races hosted by the Castaways Sailing Club.

Sandy Smith, the Castaways Cup Committee Chairperson, and Gordon Rowse chaired many, many meetings, made hundreds of phone calls, and smiled for an entire year to produce this event.  Although Gordon fell down slightly on the weather Saturday, the excellent event was a tribute to everyone who served on their committees.

The photos below were contributed by Jon Luscomb, Laurie Schubert, Elizabeth Anne Hindman-Bell and Sandy Smith.  There is room for more if you have some you want to see published.

Wacky Hats

The wacky hats awards came before the "real" awards, an effort by their builders to gain the maximum handicap for the boats pictured on the hats.  The winners of the wacky hat contest were Neal Sorensen on Hot Tuna and Richard Dwyer on Tenacious.
