Classes: Depending on the number of entries, there will be at least one PHRF class, one JAM (jib and main) class. Other classes will be created as needed with a minimum of 3 entries (i.e. Multi-hull or Cat Fight). PHRF class participants will sail to valid PHRF handicaps as prescribed by the mean of the National High and National Low handicap of U.S. Sailing. If a valid PHRF Certificate is shown, that handicap will be used. Click here to visit the USA Sailing PHRF information. Awards:
Saturday: Pool gathering after the race. Day 1 prizes will be awarded at a buffet dinner in the Palm Room beginning at 7:00. Cash bars will be on tap with live entertainment and dancing throughout the evening. Day 2 prizes and the coveted CASTAWAYS CUP will be awarded on October 5, at a time and place to be announced. Our trophies are world class, distinct and tasteful, and have received many compliments, so come and give a go! The Start, The Course, The Finish: Saturday/Start: The start will be a pursuit start beginning approximately one-quarter mile north of the Lake Worth/Palm Beach Inlet. The first start will be at 9:00 am. All auxiliary engines must be shut off no later than 5 minutes before your starting time and remain off until your finish. Any boat seen by race committee running the engine AFTER THE FIVE MINUTE WARNING will be Protested. In the unusual case of lack of wind, the race committee may delay the start until the breeze arrives. The race committee will announce new times over the VHF radio channel 72 to all competitors. Continue to monitor Channel 72 through out the race for relevant information from the race committee. A pursuit start is a start where an exact starting time based on your rating will be assigned to you. There will be a starting line between the committee boat and a floating palm tree mark. The hope is to: (a) relieve a skipper’s anxiety in a starting situation and a crowded line. It is like golf. You start at your time, and (b) is to have all boats, faster and slower alike, finish the race at the same time and thereby arrive at the dock/party/pool at the same time! Sunday/ Start: The Starting line will be just south of the St. Lucie Inlet Channel around ½ miles offshore. The start will be a traditional “ready, set, go” in accordance with RRS 26. That means a five (5) minute start sequence. The first signal marking the beginning of the five (5) minute sequence will be at 10:00 on the committee boat’s G.P.S. time. That means that at 10:05, a signal will announce the “GO” and mono-hulls will begin the race. At 10:10 the multi-hulls will begin their race. Some of you may wonder what you are supposed to do during this “lag”, shall we say, of time between the “warning” and the “start”. Well, most boats sail around saying good morning and try to, without being noticed, jockey their boat and crew into a place on the line where they feel is the most advantageous starting position relative to the wind and the rest of the fleet. For those of you that have not had the pleasure, you will soon see and you will love it! All auxiliary engines must be shut off at the five (5) minute warning signal or else…see consequences as outlined above. The Course and The Finish: September 20th – The Atlantic Ocean with no eastern boundary except possibly the Bahamas or Spain, and no western boundary except say, Florida. Saturday will go from a starting line just north of Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet to a finish line just south and offshore of St. Lucie Inlet. Latitude and Longitude of the finish line will be announced via VHF radio Channel 72 once the race committee gets there, but for tactical reasons, figure it will be near the sea buoy of the inlet. The exact reverse of what I said about the course will apply to Sunday. Scoring: Finish times will be recorded for both Saturday and Sunday’s races. Those times will be used to calculate the individual race awards and the Castaways Cups overall winner for each class. Dockage and Hotel Reservations: Attendees may make hotel reservations at (772) 225-7139. A block of reduced rate rooms have been reserved at a rate of $109.00/night for this regatta.
