The third annual Castaways Cup, Palm Beach County’s only major Fall
sailing event, was held Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16,
2007. The Castaways Cup is a two-leg, sprint race between the Palm
Beach and St. Lucie inlets. The first leg is a Pursuit Race with a
staggered start based on PHRF
handicaps, making for an exciting finish as the
contenders near the finish line at the same time. In our first annual race in
our Jib and Main (JAM) class, the twenty mile race to the St. Lucie Inlet was
won by only half a boat length!
The first leg is followed by an evening of fun, entertainment, dinner and
announcement of winners of the first race. Participants and guests will
gather at the Hutchinson Island Marriott Hotel & Marina for the awards dinner
and door prizes, donated by various boating-related businesses.
The second leg, starting at 10AM Sunday Sept. 16 off the St. Lucie inlet, is a
conventional start with the finish line at the Palm Beach Inlet. The awards
dinner for both races and the overall winner of the Castaways Cup was held Saturday evening, Sept. 22
at the Marriott and very well attended.
Our official Notice of Race and flyers
describing the event was sent out June 30. Skippers who enter either
of our two classes (Spinnaker or JAM Class) were charged an entry fee of
$125, which included all race fees, plus a ticket to each of the two
awards dinners. Skippers who enter their boats in the race prior to August 1,
2007 earned a discount in their entry fee, from $125 to $100. Spouses,
friends and crew are invited to the dinners at a cost of $45 for the
Hutchinson Island Marriott Resort event which includes a full dinner and
entertainment.
Skippers were
invited to bring their boats early and join our club raft-up Friday evening,
Sept. 14, 2007, in Old Port Cove at our club mooring ball or to anchor out near the
ball. Other accommodations will be provided as necessary. GPS coordinates of
the mooring ball will be provided to entrants who wish to join the raft-up.
Our special thanks go out to Karen and Jon who skipped a day of sailing to
motor the race route and take these wonderful photographs. Many more are
