Winners of the 2009 Fellowship Cup

The 2009 Fellowship Cup year long racing series was successfully concluded with our second annual awards ceremony on December 9.  An enthusiastic crowd of over 30 Castaways Sailing and Palm Beach Sailing Club racers enjoyed the revelry and friendship that mark this year long event.  Twenty additional regulars looked on from the bar as they wished they were part of the racing participants.

Palm Beach Sailing Club Commodore Jackie Waddell opened the evening by thanking PBSC Race Chairman Carl Schellbach and CSC Race Chairman Gordon Rowse for the hours of organization, effort and thought they put into organizing the racing series and finding the marks that seemed to forever drift with a mind of their own.

Castaways Sailing won the competition this year, defeating Palm Beach Sailing by 191 to 121.  One more Palm Beach Sailing Club boat would have made the total much closer.  The actual competition was much closer than the overall score.

Awards were presented for each of the three series of races held during the year as well as the presentation of the Fellowship Cup to the club winning the overall yearly series.. There were fourteen individual awards that coincidently split equally between the two clubs. However, the Castaways took first overall, second overall, and fourth overall to outscore PBSC to take the Fellowship Cup for the second straight year..

This year we had over 25 boats from the two clubs participate.  Participants were about equally split between the two clubs.  In addition, we encouraged boats from other clubs or unaffiliated with a club to join in the fun.  This year several independents joined in to increase our overall fleet- an excellent turnout.

We are now preparing for the 2010 Fellowship Cup. The  NOR is available from the web site (click here);  we are encouraging everyone to fill out the forms and get ready for the first race January 10th. Remember just being there earns points for both you and your club.  Contact Bob Gebbia if you have any questions.

Please peruse the results attached, and ask yourself... Why wasn't I out there???  Skippers are often looking for crew and many are good teachers and eager to help new racers learn the skill.

Series One Results

The first of three series between the Palm Beach Sailing Club and the Castaways Sailing Club has been completed and scored.

As you can see from the score sheet (Click Here) CSC commanded a point count of 102 to 60 at the end of Series 1. Thats a bunch. The racers should be proud of the turnout and the results. That is the good news.

Taking a closer look at the three fleets you will notice that only the PHRF fleet was taking advantage of the 5,3,2, 1 point scoring, while the Jam, and Multihull fleets were only getting 1 point/boat. That is because the scoring is based on having 3 boats/ fleet turning out for a race. Just one more boat turning out in the JAM Class would have made a 70 point swing in the results.

Looking a little more closely CSC is a little thin for competitors in the JAM Class, this is not going unnoticed at PBSC. They are rousting out some players and the last race they turned out enough JAM participates to clean house to the tune of 15 to 8 in the second race of the second series.

Yes CSC did OK in the first race of the second series. 12 to 2, but just one more PBSC boat showing up in JAM and the results would have been 12 to 9.

JAM racing is fun, so for those of you that have any questions please don't hesitate to contact any member of the CSC Race committee for the details to get started. For the Spinnaker Boats, we need to get all the participation we can get, PBSC is getting some well sailed yachts out to race, as the results show.

Getting 3 Multihulls on the line for an afternoon of pulling sheets with no spilled glasses will make a 10 point impact on the Fellowship Cup/race, that to has a potential of 20 points for CSC for this Series. Just getting out for one Sunday a month will go a long way towards CSC keeping the Fellowship Cup in our hands for a second year in a row. The detailed results of Series 11 Race 1, and Series 11 Race 2 will be available shortly.
