December 17 - Presentation of Fellowship Award - Palm Beach Sailing Club - 7 p.m.

The Castaways are in the catbird seat for the  award for the 2008 Season. The presentation of the Award was given to the winning club, our very own Castaways, on Wed evening Dec. 17th , 1900 at the Palm Beach Sailing Club. You and your crew are invited for the event – especially if you participated in competing for the coveted Prize and its accompanying bragging rights. There were a total of 27 different boats participating, about equally split between the two clubs. It will be fun to spend a few hours reviewing a whole season of friendly competition. Please help out the kitchen by contacting the PBSC Club at 881-0809 ( 24/7) and leave a message for your reservation. Drinks at 1700, dinner at 1800. I look forward to seeing you there.  Brian Beaver, Castaways race committee chairman, accepted the award from Robin Baker from the Palm Beach Sailing Club as Gordon Rowse stood on planning for next year's season.

Planning to Race:   Boats racing must declare club affiliation (will hold for a series).  Entrants must notify  either of the Joint Committee Chairman  by the Friday before a planned start.    (*Castaways Cup and the *Fred Thomas Memorial require separate applications). Boats submitting a valid PHRF Certificate will be assigned that rating.  Boats that do not have a certificate will be assigned a PHRF rating based on the average rating of US PHRF Racing Fleet Data Base and may be adjusted either up or down.  You are encouraged to have a valid certificate to minimize handicap discussions.

All competitors must monitor Channel  72 on race day for race committee instructions ( checking in, course, class starts, number of races, and other details).  Protests must be announced before a yacht finishes and received  in writing within 24 hours.   Races that are cancelled will attempt to be rescheduled the following week or made up by extra races on a  regular scheduled date.

Classes: PHRF- Spinnaker: PHRF Non – Spinnaker:  PHRF – Multihulls.   The  PHRF Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker boats may be combined if not enough boats are racing in each class ( Non- spinnaker boats will receive a handicap allowance determined by the joint race committee): Minimum of 3 boats to constitute a race, and a  Minimum of 5 boats per fleet to receive a separate start.  Monitor Channel 72 for specific start instructions.

Scoring for the inter club match Award will be as follows and is the sum of all 8 races in all classes:

5 points for each first place finish

3 points for each second place finish

2 points for each third place finish

1 point for each boat that properly starts and finishes.

0 points for DNC, DNF, or DSQ.

The results of each race and the cumulative club totals will be posted as soon as possible after each race.

Awards for series ( individual boats) and the overall club competition (Castaways or PBSC) will be at an event at the end of the season ( to be announced).  Minimum of 3 boats/fleet for first place award – 5 boats/fleet for a second and – 7 boats/fleet for third.  Individual Club Races eg. Castaways Cup – Fred Thomas Memorial;  will have their own awards.

All races will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing RRS  2004-2008 and US Sailing Prescriptions, except as modified by the Joint Committee or by the Race Committee conducting a particular event. Competitors participate in any event entirely at their own risk. See Rule 4, Decision to Race. Neither the Palm Beach Sailing Club, the Castaways Sailing Club nor any of their officers or directors nor any person organizing or conducting any event accepts any liability for property damage or personal injury or death (even if caused by their own negligence) sustained by any person in conjunction with, prior to, during or after any event.

____________________________

The Castaways and Palm Beach Sailing Clubs sponsored a series of races during the Summer of 2008.  The first series draws to a close with a total of 39 boats crossing the start lines for the competing clubs, with 25 starts for the Castaways and 14 for Palm Beach Sailing Club.

This is an excellent way to gain sailing and racing experience.  The races are friendly, most of the boats find the marks, and the slower boats enjoy the day just as much as the faster boats.  If you are interested in more racing information, please contact Gordon Rowse, Castaways Race Chairman at (561) 844-9161  or Brian Beaver, PBSC Race Chairman at  (561) 844-3178.  Gordon and Brian can also help you find a crew slot on one of the races if you want to learn or enjoy a day on the water.

The club points for Series 1 as of July 22 are based on the number of boats representing each club that cross the starting line and are as follows:

   SERIES I CLUB POINTS

RACE 1

RACE 2

RACE 3

(Castaways Cup Sept 20)
RACE 4

TOTALS

  5/18/2008 6/22/2008 7/20/2008
CSC 8 8 9   25
PBSC 4 6 4   14

The club point scoring is designed to encourage less experienced boats to come out and represent their club!  We especially encourage multi-hull boats to join the fun.  We had two multihulls competing on July 20 and need three to have a multihull class.

The upcoming Offshore Racing schedule is available by clicking on the Race Calendar.

On May 18, 2008 two races were conducted.  Here are the results:
